1. Find A Home For Everything And return your items back to their home when they are not being used. When shopping, envisage where you will put that item in your home. If you cannot find a place, don't buy it.

2. Pick A Purpose for Each RoomSometimes the function for the room is obvious such as kitchen or bathroom, but for some rooms which have multiple purposes, create order by creating zones. I find using bookshelves such Kallax from Ikea helps to create zones and organize the room beautifully.

3. Buy Less StuffThis doesn't mean you have to be a minimalist, but don't buy stuff just because it's on sale or free. Think about how you will get rid of the item (especially if it is big furniture) once you no longer like it.

4. Buy a Label Maker I have a super duper state of the art one by Brother as I use it often with my clients. However, you can buy simply hand held ones such as this one from Brother retailers.

5 Just Say NoReduce the burden of accepting events to events or opportunities, if you do not have time for them. Be gracious and polite, but if you do not have time, do not say yes just to please the other person.

6. Keep Surfaces Clutter FreeFollow this rule in each room, but especially in the Kitchen and Bathroom. Remember this is prime real estate on your  counter that is being used up. If you use it every day, keep the within easy reach. Anything that is not used often should be put away (or even decluttered if it is not used at all).  I usually recommend that the coffee machines stays on the counter, but the food processor is put away.

7. Don't WaitWhen you come home, put the item away straight away in its designated place, such as wardrobe, shoe cupboard, etc. Always think "Does it belong here" and if no, put it where it does belong immediately. It will only take a few seconds.

8. Keep the Items You Use Often Within Arm's ReachPlace items in cupboards or wardrobes that you use often within arm's reach. Anything that you use less often can be put up high or at the back.

9. Arrange Like with LikeWhat do I mean by this? In your linen cupboard, put all the sheets together on one shelf, towels on another, etc. In the pantry, put all the canned goods together, pasta together and boxed food in another area.

10. Use the DoorThe back of the door is a great place to store items using a shoe organizer. Here are my favourite uses of shoe organizers behind the door:

11. Get Rid of Duplicates Did you buy two items as you forgot you had one at home, or have your merged households. Whatever the reason, donate, sell or trash the second item. If you sell the duplicates you could make a bit of extra cash.

12. Coordiante CalendarsWith online calendars available on our smart phones, it's time to give access to each other's schedules, so you can check them before making any commitments. To ensure that the other person knows about an event, send them an invite for them to see and accept. If you need help to start getting organized, contact me to find out how we can help you (and we will share even more secrets with you).
