Moving from a villa to an apartment or moving in with your other half? If yes, then you have to consider downsizing. It can be tricky to move from a smaller space or sharing with someone else but we can help with some handy tricks on how to make that transition as smooth as possible.

1. Take a Close Inventory of Your StuffReview your stuff and ask yourselfa. Does it bring me joyb. Do I use it oftenc. Would I cry if it was lost in a fire?If you said yes to any of the above questions, then keep it. If no, donate, sell or throw away the item.Review your inventory list together especially if you are merging into one home. Be ruthless with your lists and know that you can always buy something new for your new home at a later time.

2. Can you Replace ItemsAre there items that you can replace for your new home? How about buying a smaller tv or space saving furniture? If you are moving in with your partner, why not start afresh and buy a new sofa set and sell your current sets?

3. Sell your ItemsYou will want to make some money to buy new items for your home, so why not sell the items you do not want on Melltoo, various Flea Markets, Second Hand Facebook groups or second hand clothes shops. Items to consider selling include extra cupboards and drawers, mattresses and beds, lamps, electronic items.

4. Donate Items You Cannot SellThere are various charities that will take clothes, toys and books. Check out my previous blog on where to donate your small items.

5. Remove the Duplicate ItemsWhether you are moving in with someone else or downsizing, duplicate items are a terrible idea. Bear in mind when downsizing that you will not have enough rooms for 20 plates to entertain a dinner party.  4-6 plates will be sufficient.

6. Use Storage Solution FurnitureWhen you move into your new place, use storage solutions such as Ottomans that open up, wall mounted shelving, etc to keep things organised and off the floor.  However, don't think that because your have the storage space that it should be used up. The whole point of downsizing is to lighten your load.Once you have moved into your new space, be ruthless in your approach of bringing new items into your home. Space will be at a premium and it can easily get cluttered without too much time or effort. Ensure that anything you buy will have a space for itself in your home or it is something your really need or want.

Use the adage, one in, one out to help ensure you do not increase your clutter.Downsizing does not have to be an ordeal. Yes it can be an emotional experience, but think of how lighter you will feel having less Stuff in your life. If you are downsizing to lessen your commute to work or to be closer to friends and family, remember the downsizing path is leading you to a happier life. If you are downsizing to save money think of how much money you will be saving and accumulating.  Whatever your reasons for downsizing, the more joyful you can make the process, the smoother it will go.If you need help with downsizing, contact us and we will be more than happy.
