The HR Observer - Tidy Desk, Tidy Mind – Why You Should Listen?
I recently had the pleasure of contributing to the HR Observer, where I shared my thoughts on how decluttering and organising your workspace can positively impact your overall productivity and well-being. It was an exciting opportunity to talk about a subject I am passionate about: how our physical environment can directly influence our mental clarity.
As a professional organiser, I’ve worked with many clients who are overwhelmed, not just by their workload but by the physical clutter surrounding them. We often underestimate how much our environment affects our ability to focus and stay calm. A messy desk doesn’t just look unprofessional—it can lead to stress, anxiety, and a constant sense of being behind on tasks.
There’s a mental shift that occurs when you sit at a clean, organised desk. It feels like you’ve got a fresh slate and can take on the day without the distraction of unnecessary items piled around you. This is especially important in today’s work-from-home or hybrid work environments, where many people are trying to juggle work-life balance within the same space. It can be tough to separate the two if you’re constantly staring at yesterday’s papers or last week’s to-do list while trying to work.
But it’s not just about having a neat space; it’s about creating an environment that supports your productivity. For me, the idea of “a tidy desk, a tidy mind” isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about being able to focus better, work smarter, and reduce the background noise in our minds caused by clutter.
I also believe that taking the time to declutter your workspace is an act of self-care. It’s a signal to yourself that you value your time, your work, and your mental health. When you make space on your desk, you make space in your mind to focus on the tasks that matter. And the benefits are long-lasting—you’ll find yourself less stressed, more efficient, and better able to tackle whatever comes your way.
I was thrilled to share these insights with the HR Observer, as it gave me a chance to highlight the importance of workspace organisation for professionals. Whether you’re in an office or working remotely, taking a few moments each day to tidy up can have a profound impact on your mood and productivity.
