22 of the Best Organizing Tips And Ideas From Shelina

A lot of organisers will be telling you about following their decluttering challenges for the new year. We all have enough going on in our lives right now, without facing challenges, so instead I want to share with you my 22 best organising tips and ideas to help you tackle your clutter this year.

  1. Don’t declutter, do a mini-declutter - spend 15-20 minutes on one area say a shelf in the kitchen, your coffee table or a small cabinet in your bathroom. Get rid of everything that you do not use, like, wear, fit into and is generally taking up valuable real estate in your home. Do this every day and you will get rid of a huge amount of stuff.

  2. Categorise the items left in each area so that like for like items are together.

  3. Redo the mini-declutter in the categorised piles to see if you can get rid of anything else.

  4. Decide what storing solutions will work for you based on what you have kept.

  5. Label any boxes or areas to build the habit of staying organised.

  6. If you buy one thing, get rid of two.

  7. If you really want to decant your laundry detergent into a drinks dispenser, ok, but really don’t waste your time creating more work and clutter unnecessarily.

  8. If you buy online and it is a fail, give it back. Go to your account, order, return and organise for it to go back and to get that refund in cash.

  9. To store your linen - put the full set in a pillow case. Saves you having to search for all the parts to do the bed.

  10. See the clothes and not the hangers

    • Use black velvet hangers * to hang dresses, tops, shirts, trousers, abayas, dishdashes and light jackets.

    • Use wooden hangers to hang coats, jackets, suits and heavy abayas and dresses.

  11. Review your medicine every six months to see what has expired. If you have any new medicine that has not expired and not using,

  12. Clear up space in your kitchen cupboards, but reviewing best before dates on food items every month.

  13. Declutter electronic devices in your kitchen that you don’t use. See if someone else will use it or donate it to charity.

  14. Throw any broken electronics - toasters, kettles, etc - into the recycle bin rather than keeping them and taking up valuable real estate.

  15. Collect all the pens in the house and sit in front of the tv watching a good movie whilst testing the pens to see which are to be kept and which are to go in the recycle bin.

  16. Keep out of season clothing such as winter jumpers in boxes at the top of your wardrobe.

  17. Store cashmere and other special wooly items in acid free tissue * when not in use.

  18. Toys - declutter old, broken and unused toys out of the room.

  19. Rotate the toys by leaving 1-2 box of toys within easy reach for the kids and the rest of the toys in storage. At the end of the month swap the boxes.

  20. Use the acronym FAT to deal with paper and emails. FAT stands for File, Act and Toss.

  21. Review your books every few months and donate or freecycle the ones you have finished, not reading or just getting dusty to someone who may enjoy it.

  22. Speaking of books, if you need more tips on how to organise your home, you buy my new book “Can you Find it in Five Seconds” by licking on the link here.
