App of the Week - Google Drive

Have you joined the Cloud movement to save your documents securely?Cloud storage services have been around for a few years but are now becoming the norm for businesses and personal users to securely save their documents and easily access them from wherever they are.I have been a regular user of Dropbox for a few years now. Recently however, I have found that documents from earlier in the year have been disappearing out of my drive. Not only is it incredibly frustrating but Dropbox have not been able to come up with a good reason why the documents are disappearing. I decided to try Google Drive to see if there could be an improvement in keeping my documents safe. From using Google Drive and Documents (another product from Google) I have found the following benefits of using these products:

  • Get 15GB free of space (compared to 2GB with Dropbox)

  • The app is web based as well as accessible with apps on your phones and tablets (both on Android and IPhone).

  • Changes are saved automatically within a few seconds.

  • Can share your files with colleagues, friends and families easily.

  • Decide what level of access and sharing to grant to additional users.

  • Multiple users can access a document at the same time.

  • You can access the drive on your laptop in a specially marked folder.

  • Build the same type of folder structure as had previously or create a new organised folder system.

  • Automatically backs up your files.

  • It's simple to use.

Whilst I highly recommend the use of Cloud services, due to my issues with Dropbox, I would always recommend saving your documents periodically on an external hard drive which you can store in your apartment or office. What are your thoughts on using Cloud based storage? Which apps are you using currently? It would be great to hear from you with your views and comments.
