Apps, Holiday and Being Organised

Having a smart phone has meant that we can be connected at all times whether on holiday or on business. As a result we have an abundance of apps to use whilst travelling and on holiday. These are my favourite apps to use whilst planning and on holiday:

1. Airline appsBritish Airways, Lufthansa and Virgin have great apps which allows you to book, manage and check the status of flights easily. You can also check in on your app.Emirates has finally released an app, but it is only on the IPad for now. Very user friends and allows you to book, manage, and look at your Skywards account.

2. Airbnb - Great app to use to find cheap accommodation in people’s homes/second homes. I used it to book accommodation in Italy, getting in touch with the owners by the app and booking instantly

3. Triposo - This app is a travel guide for the whole world (supposedly) and provides up-to-date information on the place including areas to shop, stay, eat and drink. You can download the guide and maps so that it is to hand offline which is great when you don’t want to waste your wifi.

4. Foursquare and Google Maps - I use Foursquare on a daily places to locate places including restaurants and bars. They are usually marked correctly on the Foursquare map.You can link the Foursquare map to your Google Maps apps and get directions to the location by walking, bus or car. Be warned that using Google maps can use a lot of your data.

5. Tube/Metro apps - When in London, I use Tube Status to check the status of the lines I am about to get on. Considering the amount of delays and issues, especially in the winter, it is great to know whether I should get the bus instead of getting on the tube. I also have BusMapper which updates me on the status of buses in London. There are similar apps in the major cities globally which helps when you are travelling around the city.

6. The Weather Channel/Yahoo Weather - I have linked Yahoo Weather onto my IPhone so that I can check the weather for specific cities at a flick of the screen. Always useful especially when travelling in Europe.

7. North Face Snow Report - I am a snowboarder occasionally and love this app as it updates me on the snow conditions in major resorts in Europe and Americas. Unfortunately it does not provide information for Lebanon and Easter Europe but hopefully that will be included soon.

8. Skype - Essential to talk to friends and family whilst on holiday to let them know you are safe and be smug about your holiday. If you can talk Skype to Skype on WIFI you save on telephone costs!

9. Kindle and Magazines - If you do not have a Kindle, the Kindle app enables you to download books from Amazon and read them on your tablet.  It will save you lugging books around and means if you finish a book you can buy a new one easily from the Amazon app (for some reason you cannot buy books from the Kindle App – missed a trick there).I download my favourite magazines (Empire and InStyle UK) onto my IPad to save carrying them on the flight. The only problem is that you cannot read your IPad whilst you are taking off or landing, but still a great way to save luggage space.

10. Games - My game of choice is Candy Mania to play on my phone when having to wait around due to delayed flights, etc. If I finish all my lives, I move onto Candy Crush :S.  What is your game of choice on your phone for you and your children?

These are my top choices, but what apps do you love using when you are travelling which our readers will enjoy using?
